What Gain Staging Means in a Mix
In our Volume 1 article, gain staging was about controlling signal level.
In mixing, it becomes a way to control how your mix behaves.
It affects:
- How plugins respond
- How easily you can balance levels
- How much headroom you retain
- How predictable your mix feels
This is less about avoiding problems, and more about building a stable system to work in.
The Modern Reality (DAWs Changed the Rules)
In a DAW like Logic Pro or Ableton Live:
- You have effectively unlimited internal headroom
- You can turn things down after clipping
- You are unlikely to introduce noise by working quietly
So strictly speaking, you can ignore gain staging.
The result is usually:
- Faders sitting too low
- Plugins reacting unpredictably
- A mix that feels harder to control than it should
Gain staging solves those problems before they appear.
The Real Target: Working Levels
A practical working range for most mixes:
- Individual tracks: peaks around -12 to -18 dBFS
- Mix bus: peaks around -6 dBFS
These are not strict rules, but they create:
- Headroom for processing
- Consistent plugin behaviour
- Usable fader movement
Why Plugins Care About Gain
Many plugins are designed around analogue expectations.
They often behave best when fed a moderate level.
If you hit them too hard:
- Compressors clamp too aggressively
- Saturation becomes harsh
- EQ curves can feel exaggerated
If you hit them too softly:
- They may feel inactive
- You lose intended character
Gain staging ensures plugins operate in a predictable range.
A Practical Gain Staging Workflow
1. Start Quiet
Before adding plugins:
- Pull down all track levels
- Aim for sensible peaks (around -12 to -18 dBFS)
This gives you space to build the mix.
2. Set Gain Before Plugins
Do not rely on faders alone.
Use:
- Clip gain
- Gain/trim plugins
This ensures the signal enters the plugin at the right level.
3. Control Levels Through the Chain
After each plugin:
- Check output level
- Avoid accidental increases
A simple approach:
If it gets louder, bring it back down unless louder is intentional.
4. Use Faders for Balance
Once levels are controlled:
- Use faders to mix
- Make small, precise adjustments
If your faders are all near the bottom, your gain staging is too hot.
5. Leave Headroom on the Master
Do not mix into 0 dBFS.
Aim for:
- Around -6 dBFS peak on the master
This keeps your mix ready for mastering or further processing.
Gain Staging as a Creative Tool
This is where it moves beyond “correct technique”.
Driving a signal into a plugin changes the sound.
Examples:
- Pushing a compressor for punch
- Driving saturation for harmonics
- Hitting a filter harder for character
The difference is intent.
Controlled gain shaping creates tone.
Uncontrolled gain creates problems.
Common Mixing Mistakes
- Starting with everything too loud
- Letting plugin chains gradually increase level
- Using faders to fix gain problems
- Ignoring input levels on plugins
- Chasing loudness too early
These make mixing harder than it needs to be.
A More Useful Way to Think About It
Forget strict rules.
Think in terms of control:
- Can you adjust levels easily?
- Do plugins behave predictably?
- Does the mix feel stable?
If the answer is yes, your gain staging is working.
