“Impulsion” by After Geometry develops from a low, rumbling foundation, where rhythm and texture are closely intertwined. The opening introduces a bubbling electronic pulse, surrounded by noise and shifting tones that create a moody, unsettled atmosphere.
The track builds gradually. Synth lines rise through the mix, adding harmonic detail while remaining understated. There is no sudden change in direction. Instead, the piece grows through accumulation, with layers folding into one another and expanding the sound field.
The rhythmic elements feel organic despite their electronic source. The pulsing movement never becomes rigid, allowing the track to maintain a sense of fluidity. This gives the impression of constant motion without relying on a fixed groove.
As the arrangement develops, harmonies become more defined. They emerge subtly, adding warmth beneath the surface while the surrounding textures continue to shift. The balance between tonal elements and noise remains consistent, keeping the focus on atmosphere rather than structure.
“Impulsion” reflects a process-driven approach. Much of the material is shaped through cassette recorders and dictaphones, with audio routed in and out of these machines and captured using contact microphones. This introduces mechanical textures that sit alongside more traditional synthesis.
Synth material is primarily generated using analogue sources, including a Prophet, combined with digital processing and distortion. The result is a sound that blends tonal clarity with more degraded, abstract elements, without leaning into obvious lo-fi tropes.
About After Geometry
After Geometry is the project of Brussels-based musician Victor Goemans, who moved from a classical background into electronic and electroacoustic work. The project centres on experimentation with synthesis and found sound, often focusing on instability and decay as core ideas.
