It’s always a pleasure to be sent new music from Bricolage, being one of our favourite electronic music labels over at electronica.org.uk. So of course I was more than happy to get a preview from Bricolage of the new album from Dark Fidelity Hi-Fi, who we’ve featured a couple of times previously.
Although Bricolage tend to focus on the electronic scene north of the border, they’re not afraid to travel south sometimes. This has enabled us to get the opportunity to enjoy the work of Manchester based musician and producer Rick Jones. As Dark Fidelity Hi-Fi, Rick has now completed a new album, Migration Of The Meaning, following up on previous releases Beautiful Fragments and Machine Blossoms.
Migration Of The Meaning is the opener to the album, which begins with some lovely chords but is then joined by live sounding drums, something I wasn’t expecting, but gives a different feel to what I’ve previously heard from DFHF, the drums almost add a festival vibe to sound I’ve become accustomed to. We soon transition to darker electronic elements bringing us back down to earth.
There’s a gentleness to the album that contrasts beautifully with the abstract electronic sounds that underpin the Dark Fidelity sounds. Layers of pads and melodic fragments are effectively matched with glitches, static and grooves to keep us in the headspace of the creator.

Movement has a wonderfully chilled vibe to it, with subtle drum parts underpinning some warm synth parts and delicate chords, definitely one for that late night, just back home kind of vibe…
Compared to previous releases this is definitely feeling more relaxed, the groove on Treasures makes me gently sway as I listen, and type these words. It’s interesting enough in its subtle arrangement to keep me wanting more…
At 2:52 Broken Neon is the shortest track on the album, and more ambient than other parts of the album. It’s a great soundscape, with fragments of vocal appearing through the synth washes, percussion and static sounds…
