Yelmur is the new genre-bending solo project from the Dutch Berlin based composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jelmer de Haan. He blends the sound design, manipulation and aesthetics of electronic-music with elements of jazz, prog-rock and contemporary classical music.
His debut album ‘How We Hide’ is set to be released in two parts, with ‘Part One’ coming out September 2nd and the complete record following later in the year with a limited edition vinyl release.
The music is filled with details, carefully crafted sounds that allow for new discoveries upon every listen. The atmospheric songs tell stories about different aspects of mental-health; anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, insomnia and hiding one’s feelings.
How We Hide, as the title implies focusses on the way we as people hide from others, whether that’s through social media, or in real life. It’s very dark, with plenty of re-pitched and processed vocals, itself hiding the true voice behind the track. There’s layers of guitars, synths and drums that build in texture over time creating a wonderful and engaging sound, albeit one which could give you nightmares…
Yelmur started his musical life as a child, taking classical piano lessons and later writing his first compositions. As a teenager he switched to his main instrument E-Bass, which he later studied as a jazz degree in the acclaimed music colleges of Groningen and Leipzig. After graduating he moved to Berlin where he became an active session bassist, playing gigs and recording sessions for a variety of artists.
In Berlin, he dove into the world of analog synthesizers and electronic-music, continuing to develop his skills and becoming a self-taught producer. Through continuous experimentation and by drawing from his past influences and experiences, he developed his unique sound that comes together in his debut record ‘How We Hide’.
How We Hide is the title track of Yelmur’s debut record, which is available digitally and as a limited edition eco-friendly vinyl pressing. Check out the Bandcamp link to get your vinyl copy!
