The Octopus Project are an electronic music group from Texas that have been active for over 20 years. They were recently invited to perform their 2007 track “I Saw the Bright Shinies” using the new Etherwave Theremin.
Filmed in the Moog Sound Lab, the Austin-based electronica group uses a variety of vintage and modern Moog synthesizers, in addition to employing the Etherwave as both a lead instrument and a CV controller for Moog’s paraphonic semi-modular analog synthesizer, Matriarch. We used 16 Moog pieces of gear in total! Yvonne is playing the melody on the new Etherwave Theremin, with harmonies from Spencer on a Moog One and Toto on a vintage Rogue. Josh plays a rhythm part and chorus swells on a Matriarch. Main synth sequence consists of one monophonic line cycling through 5x Mother 32s, beats come from 3x DFAM, sub bass from an additional Mother 32. Chords in the chorus are running on an independent synth within Spencer’s Moog One, and the call-and-response on the chorus is between Yvonne’s Etherwave and an additional Matriarch which Toto is modulating with his own theremin acting as a CV controller. 100% Moog sound sources, MIDI programming done in Ableton Live, reactive visuals made with TouchDesigner.
It’s great to see so many Moogs in action together, although it’s making me want to go and buy synthesisers!
