Sova – Hymn for Slowing Review: Mellow lo-fi piano and understated sax

Hymn for Slowing settles into a lo-fi piano mood, the keys recorded with a warm, slightly rough edge that keeps things intimate rather than polished.

A saxophone enters and slots in as a complementary, jazzy colour—low-key and tasteful rather than showy—giving the piece a relaxed forward motion while keeping it understated. The sax credit in the release notes (Sam Torres) lines up with what you hear: a restrained performance that leans into atmosphere.

In the second half the track becomes even more ambient; the piano recedes into washes of texture and the sax lines stretch into softer, more textural shapes. The overall effect is introspective and gently forward-moving rather than dramatic.

Hymn for Slowing is the third single from Sova’s upcoming album Alight!, and the track shows why the artist chose the new moniker: it’s a small but clear step away from a purely modern-classical palette toward looser, jazz-tinged, ambient territory.
