Mali Obomsawin – Automatic Review: Uneasy, Looping Experimental Rock

The track opens on a slightly disjointed guitar riff that sets an uneasy momentum from the first bar. Vocal fragments arrive early — looped and layered to supply texture rather than a clear lead — giving the opening an eerie, mysterious quality while the guitar slowly develops around them.

Low-key drums enter and begin to move the piece forward, loosening the initial instability without settling it. Saxophone elements weave through the mix, adding a jazz-tinged colour that makes the arrangement feel part experimental rock, part loose improv. Across the track the vocal layers are treated more as textural material than narrative, which keeps attention on how the instrumental parts interact rather than a conventional verse-chorus shape.

Later sections sustain that experimental vibe: the guitar keeps evolving, the drums nudge the groove without locking it into a strict pocket, and the saxophone continues to colour the space rather than dominate. The arrangement leans into psychedelic textures and subtle interplay, so the track remains engaging through small shifts in layering and emphasis rather than big dynamic changes.

Context from the release notes explains some of the record’s wider concerns: “Automatic” is part of Mali Obomsawin’s second solo album and the project is informed by her work reclaiming archival Abenaki recordings. While those archival elements aren’t foregrounded in this track the sense of temporal layering — looping vocals, layered acoustic instruments and processing — sits comfortably alongside the album’s stated intent to treat ancestral material as living improvisation rather than museum content.

The piece works because of its restraint: it doesn’t try to resolve the unease of the opening but lets that tension play against developing guitar lines, sparse drums and occasional sax flourishes. It’s an experiment in texture and momentum where small, deliberate changes keep the listener engaged.
