A crunchy, lo-fi wash opens ‘enjoy losing’, with bleeping electronics and a slow drone folded together into an ambient texture that keeps expanding.
Layers of grit and subtle percussion orbit the drone; rhythmic elements move slowly, more felt than propulsive, while small processed bleeps and bit-crunchy detail crop up around the edges. The production’s layering keeps the piece engaging as sounds develop rather than rush.
Calhoun lives in Philadelphia and his solo work here continues his project naps. He describes the title as originating from playing chess on his phone and says the recording was made with a contact mic and a rosary in hand. That close, tactile capture gives the textures a weathered intimacy without ever making the mix feel claustrophobic.
It’s less about momentum than patient development: crunchy surfaces, slow-moving percussive gestures and the persistent drone hold the focus. The piece rewards attentive repeats, largely because of its careful layering and engaging lo-fi production choices.
