Erik Lankin, the Montreal-based composer and producer, offers a compelling glimpse into his debut LP, The Icarus Album, with the release of the intense and atmospheric track “Labyrinth.” This piece serves as a haunting introduction to the album, which reinterprets the myth of Daedalus as Lankin grapples with the profound loss of his father to suicide.
“Labyrinth” begins with reversed sounds and descending melodic elements, creating a dense, classical soundscape infused with ambient and electronic undertones. The track is both intense and engaging, drawing listeners into its rich and atmospheric depths.
The tormented opening track sets the scene on a stormy island where Daedalus is imprisoned within his own creation. Lankin masterfully blends harsh modal clusters from a classical string ensemble with electroacoustic elements, including static speaker tearing and a low-register heartbeat that pulses an 8-bit binary message: “I AM NOT OK.”
Lankin describes this track as a deeply personal expression, channeling the spectrum of emotions he experienced while dealing with his father’s death. This emotional vulnerability, paired with his sophisticated musical theory, secured multiple funding requests from the Canada Council for the Arts, allowing him to bring his ambitious vision to life.
