Elvar Smári – Longwave Review: Neoclassical Strings Meet Electronic Atmosphere

“Longwave” opens with beautifully layered ambient textures, immediately establishing an immersive and reflective atmosphere. Electronic processing and synthesizer tones intertwine with the warmth of a string quartet, creating a sound that feels both contemporary and timeless.

A steady electronic pulse provides the foundation while the strings slowly evolve above it, shifting harmonies and introducing subtle melodic ideas that unfold with patience. The arrangement develops naturally, allowing each layer to emerge without disrupting the overall sense of calm. Rather than relying on dramatic changes, the track draws its emotional impact from gradual harmonic movement and carefully controlled dynamics.

What works particularly well is the relationship between the acoustic and electronic elements. The synthesizers never overpower the string quartet, instead acting as an extension of it, blurring the distinction between traditional instrumentation and modern production. The result is a cohesive soundscape that feels meticulously composed while remaining emotionally engaging.

Recorded at Sigur Rós’ Sundlaugin Studio in Iceland, “Longwave” began as an exploration of translating synthesizer production techniques onto a live string quartet. That concept is realised successfully throughout the piece, with electronic textures and acoustic performance merging into a single musical language.

Based between Reykjavík and Copenhagen during its creation, “Longwave” serves as the debut release from Icelandic composer and producer Elvar Smári. Drawing inspiration from composers such as Arvo Pärt alongside the electronic textures of Boards of Canada, the track occupies a compelling space between neoclassical composition and ambient electronica.

With a background spanning film composition, production, and synthesizer development, Elvar Smári brings a broad musical perspective to his work. “Longwave” introduces that vision with confidence, delivering an elegant and thoughtfully crafted composition that balances melodic sensitivity with rich electronic atmosphere.
