“Morph” opens with layers of shifting synth textures that feel almost reversed in places, gradually unfolding through rising filters and evolving atmospheres. The introduction creates a sense of anticipation before lo-fi, crunchy drum programming establishes a groove that anchors the composition.
As the rhythm develops, rhythmic piano lines enter the arrangement, bringing a strong melodic identity that contrasts effectively with the darker electronic backdrop. Originally conceived as a jazz piano improvisation before being reinterpreted on a Prophet-6 synthesizer, the piano remains central to the track’s character, providing warmth and movement within an otherwise brooding sound world.
The production is detailed and engaging throughout. Glitchy textures weave between the percussion and synth layers, while subtle harmonic shifts keep the arrangement evolving. Rather than relying on repetition alone, “Morph” continually introduces new details that reward careful listening.
What works particularly well is the balance between structure and experimentation. The combination of IDM-inspired rhythms, live instrumentation, and contemporary electronic production creates a track that feels technically accomplished while remaining emotionally engaging. The darker atmosphere never overwhelms the melodic material, allowing both elements to coexist naturally.
“Morph” is the first single from Joshua Lascar’s forthcoming EP Unbecoming, a project that continues his exploration of the meeting point between experimental electronics, jazz, and contemporary classical music. That breadth of influence is unsurprising given Lascar’s background as both a composer and performer, with credits spanning television, film, commercial commissions, and live performance.
Based in London, Joshua Lascar has composed music for broadcasters including ITV, BBC, Discovery, and National Geographic, while also performing internationally as a guitarist. His experience across multiple disciplines is reflected in “Morph”, a thoughtfully constructed track that combines strong musicianship with imaginative electronic production.
