Bajune Tobeta – After the Silence (feat. Christian Fennesz) Review: Ambient Reflection Through Sound and Silence

“After the Silence” unfolds through a delicate combination of strings, piano, and evolving ambient textures, creating a spacious and emotionally engaging soundscape. From the opening moments, the composition embraces patience, allowing each element to emerge gradually before blending into a warm and immersive atmosphere.

The acoustic instrumentation remains at the heart of the piece. Piano and strings introduce a gentle melodic foundation, while subtle electronic processing and ambient layers expand the sound beyond traditional contemporary classical music. The result is a composition that feels both intimate and expansive, with every texture carefully placed within the mix.

As the track develops, delicate percussive melodic elements begin to appear, adding movement without disturbing the overall sense of stillness. Rather than building towards a dramatic climax, the composition grows organically through subtle shifts in harmony and texture. The atmosphere remains calm throughout, encouraging focused listening and quiet reflection.

“After the Silence” is the first recorded collaboration between Tokyo-based composer Bajune Tobeta and Austrian electronic musician Christian Fennesz. The partnership is rooted in their shared connection with the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, with the music reflecting both that artistic relationship and the space left in its absence. Working between Tokyo and Vienna, the pair exchanged recordings across continents, gradually shaping the finished composition.

The track forms the centrepiece of Tobeta’s forthcoming album Anechoic, a work inspired by the concept of the anechoic chamber, a space designed to absorb reflections of sound completely. Across the album, silence itself becomes an important compositional element, sitting alongside piano, orchestral instrumentation, and subtle electronic textures.

“After the Silence” is a beautifully restrained composition that explores the relationship between sound, memory, and silence with remarkable sensitivity. The combination of acoustic performance and ambient electronics creates an immersive listening experience that lingers long after the final notes fade.
