Department of Electrophilosophy’s track “Nothing is Good in and of Itself” opens with shifting ambient tones that evoke wind or breath, setting an uneasy calm before darker textures begin to form. Processed, distorted percussion emerges—loose yet deliberate—while synth layers creep in and gradually become more disjointed, mirroring the philosophical uncertainty suggested by the track’s title.
As the piece evolves, tonal fragments collide and reshape, reflecting its inspiration from Baruch Spinoza’s assertion that nothing is intrinsically good or bad. By the closing section, the soundscape regains coherence, offering resolution without clear direction—perhaps reinforcing the idea that meaning and value are subjective constructs.
Led by father-son duo Marc and Cedric Bobro, Department of Electrophilosophy deliberately avoid conventional instruments in favour of modular synthesis, drum machines, and other experimental electronic tools. Their music is tightly interwoven with philosophical concepts, in this case offering an abstract sonic interpretation of ethical relativism.
Part of a broader EP built around Spinoza’s ideas, “Nothing is Good in and of Itself” doesn’t seek to please or provoke. Instead, it exists in a space of open-ended reflection—inviting the listener to sit with ambiguity, dissonance, and gradual transformation.
