Aurient – Are You Someone? Review: Downtempo, Processed Vocals and Disjointed Drums

A synth element at the start works more like an effect than a clear melody, a filtered shimmer that sets the mood before percussion arriThe drums establish an unusual feel from the outset, heavily processed and deliberately disjointed, with small gaps and shifted hits creating movement without settling into a straightforward groove.

Aurient’s vocal initially sits within the surrounding textures rather than dominating the track. When the drums briefly drop away later, the voice opens up and becomes more prominent, bringing a clearer melodic focus to the arrangement. Despite the amount of processing, a catchy recurring phrase gives the track a recognisable hook.

There is plenty of detail in the production, with chopped rhythms, wet synth effects and heavily treated vocals giving the track an experimental edge. The downtempo pulse keeps things relatively restrained, allowing the different textures and rhythmic edits plenty of room.

Based in Los Angeles, Aurient combines these more abstract production ideas with enough melody to keep the track accessible. It’s an interesting balance, with the fragmented drums and processed sounds continually shifting around a vocal hook that stays with you.
