A Model Kit's "Nostos": A Journey Through Sonic Depths

“Nostos” by A Model Kit is a sonic odyssey that delves into the glitchy realms of sound, pushing the boundaries of texture, and introducing a cacophony of elements that evolve and transform. “Nostos” is part of A Model Kit’s new album, “SIRENS,” and it exudes a Four Tet-like sample-packed IDM sensibility with archive recordings at its core. The track carries an air of anger and anti-imperialism, reflecting the artist’s response to the war in Ukraine.

Maxim Popov, the creative force behind A Model Kit, shares his personal connection to this project: “With a year having passed since Russia initiated a deceitful and devastating war in Ukraine, I, as a Russian artist, dedicated the majority of 2022 to exploring the depths of my inner perspectives and reactions. Alongside hundreds of thousands of others, I found myself compelled to leave the country, protesting against the war. Eventually, I returned to a project I had initiated several years ago—an exploration of the traditional music of diverse regions within Russia and neighboring countries.”

Popov’s music goes beyond the sonic landscape; it carries a profound cultural and historical resonance. He sheds light on the complex dynamics of Russia’s multiculturalism, which often masks an imperial and colonial policy. Popov’s project seeks to unearth and revitalize the traditional music of various regions, infusing it with contemporary electronic elements.

The result is an amalgamation of archival artifacts—a sonic tapestry that is noisy, dim, yet still brimming with life. It’s a reflection of the artist’s personal gravitation towards something vanishing and dissolving, encapsulated in a moment of uncertainty.
