There’s a recognisable retro character to DOGCULT’s “Manic Tonality”, with pitched samples sitting slightly off-pitch and bringing something of a 90s production feel. The surrounding textures favour grit over polish, with distortion and noise becoming an important part of the track’s sound.
An intense kick drives the rhythm, but its programming remains erratic and unpredictable. Small bursts of bitcrushing and dense noise fill the spaces around it, creating a dark, claustrophobic backdrop as the groove continually shifts.
There are elements of jungle and breakbeat within the rhythmic programming, alongside more abstract passages built from noise and processed electronic textures. Transitions can be abrupt, with changes to the kick and surrounding sounds repeatedly altering the shape of the groove.
DOGCULT is a collaborative music project formerly known as StickyNap. On “Manic Tonality”, the combination of pitched samples, irregular percussion and heavily processed textures gives the track a rough, restless electronic character.
