Mablanig, the music output of artist Bruno Cavellec, has roots in Brittany, but produces music now on the Isle of Man. Bruno creates a wonderful downtempo sound, with a maturity and sensibility to his music, inspired by electronic music pioneers such as Boards of Canada.
He’s just released an EP called The Calling, a wonderful 6 track EP exploring downtempo, ambient and cinematic vibes. It’s got a lot to offer, and all tracks are worthy of your time. Here we’re going to look at Have I Seen You Before?
It’s a lovely track, beginning with ambient strings and pads, with a gentle whispering vocal. Your prepared to settle down and appreciate the ambience, until the mood is interrupted by a growling reverse vocal that leads into beat territory. Not enough to totally disrupt us, but some gentle hip-hop kind of grooves and sampled breaks to propel us forwards. It’s interesting enough to keep us engaged throughout, with enough subtle changes in texture and mood to reward repeated listening.
And the video is pretty cool too, with visions of landscapes, maybe distant memories or places, processed with colour saturation to take us to another place. Great stuff…
