Nephets – Krush / Run: Dark Breakbeats and Mellow IDM

Artwork for Nephets tracks Krush and Run

Canadian electronic artist Nephets explores different sides of breakbeat-driven electronica across two tracks, Krush and Run, combining atmospheric synthesis, rolling rhythms and touches of old-school drum and bass.

Krush opens with a combination of slowly shifting synth layers and harmonic textures. There are hints of rhythm beneath the opening passages, but the track takes its time to develop before a darker bass sound emerges and rolling breaks begin to establish the groove.

There’s a distinctly old-school flavour to the production, particularly in the drum programming. Reversed drum fragments slip between the breaks, adding movement and detail to an arrangement that balances spacious electronic textures with a heavier rhythmic foundation. The overall mood remains dark, but there’s an appealing warmth to the sound.

Run takes a more immediate approach, opening with a busy breakbeat rhythm and a clear drum and bass influence. As the track develops, slightly jazzy chords introduce a softer melodic character, contrasting nicely with the restless percussion.

Reversed loops and shifting rhythmic details give the track an interesting, slightly off-centre quality, with shades of Aphex Twin in the interplay between melody and programmed drums. Despite the energetic breaks, the production has a surprisingly mellow feel, allowing the harmonic elements plenty of space.

Both tracks share an interest in intricate rhythms and electronic textures, but approach them from different directions. Krush leans towards darker, atmospheric breakbeats, while Run brings a lighter, more melodic quality to the same broad territory.

Both tracks were released on 7 August 2026 via Nautilus.
