Ty Lumnus – What If They Trigger A Memory?

What If They Trigger A Memory? is a wonderful album from Glaswegian producer Ty Lumnus. This album is released on the very excellent Bricolage label who continue to release some great electronic music.

This album is a great exploration of ambient synthesis, with percussive elements and enough melodic ideas to keep it moving forwards, a wonderful collection of tracks utilising modular synthesis.

Moving Towarda A Special Place starts off in a twinkly way, with delicate blippy noises lulling you into a false sense of security, after a minute or so were confronted by a stomping kick drum, accompanied by a synth with a falling rhythm to keep you in a slightly uncomfortable place. It builds in texture in the latter half of the tune, with it’s underlying mellowness firmly in the background.

Tempered, To Allow Some Time builds with longer melodic ideas, reinforced by floating harmonies on multiple synth layers, with a minimal drum pattern sitting discretely at the bottom of the mix adding a little movement. This one’s got a 90’s Aphex Twin vibe for sure…

There’s A Gateway To Another Universe At The Back Of That Cave is a great title, and straight away I want to go exploring some caves. It’s a cool track as well, maybe not as tense as the title suggests, but has some lovely textures and rhythmic synth patterns building wonderfully.

It Doesn’t End Well is a darker track than what we’ve heard so far, slow, steady synth tones are accompanied by industrial, metallic sounds that utilise reverb effects to create a sense of a large space. We’re on an arc with this one, building to a crescendo before returning to a lighter place.

There’s another 8 tracks to this album, and I’d strongly encourage you to go and have a listen. You can download the album from Bandcamp, and even buy a cassette to listen to it fully saturated…
