“Cashews” wastes little time establishing its identity. Skipping beats, atmospheric textures, vocal samples, and a deep, grumbling bassline combine to create a track that feels both playful and powerful.
The low-end is undoubtedly the star of the show. Thick, throbbing bass tones drive the track forwards, while the surrounding percussion constantly shifts and evolves. Rather than settling into a predictable groove, the arrangement introduces new rhythmic ideas and textures throughout, helping to maintain a strong sense of momentum.
There are elements of dubstep, leftfield bass music, and tearout influences present, but “Cashews” doesn’t feel tied to any one particular genre. Instead, it draws from multiple strands of bass music culture, combining heavyweight production with a willingness to experiment. Vocal samples and atmospheric sounds add further character, creating an environment that feels immersive while retaining a playful edge.
The production itself is particularly strong. Despite the density of the bass frequencies, the mix remains spacious and detailed, allowing the different elements room to breathe. The track balances energy with atmosphere, making it equally suited to focused listening and a loud sound system.
According to Squirrely Bass, “Cashews” follows the journey of a squirrel travelling through time and space while experiencing a multidimensional psychedelic adventure. As concepts go, it’s certainly memorable, and the track’s constantly shifting textures and rhythmic twists do a convincing job of bringing that unusual narrative to life.
Originally from San Diego and now based in the Pacific Northwest, Squirrely Bass has spent over a decade developing a sound rooted in underground electronic music culture. Through DJ residencies, independent releases, radio shows, and collaborations with labels including Seclusiasis, Lush Selects, and Wormhole Music Group, he has established a reputation for championing forward-thinking bass music.
“Cashews” continues that approach, delivering an energetic and inventive electronic track built around strong production, powerful bass, and a healthy dose of personality.
