Inspired by the works of Tim Hecker and William Basinski, Sean Addicott, a sound artist from Bristol, creates wonderful sound textures and environments. In 2019, Sean released ‘Tapesleep’, a chemically-corroded nod to the modern convention of a sleep tape. The project sought to explore our relationships with sleep and was exhibited interactively at Centrespace Gallery in Bristol, where a bed was utilised as a means of interfacing with the album.
‘Destroyertones‘ is Sean’s studio album, recorded between March and September 2020 and features an exploration of ambient, post-rock, and noise. The album showcases Sean’s ability to balance lightness with crushing weight, growing from a semi-sinusoidal drone to a palisade of noise, harmony, and sub-bass.
Conceptually, the album explores catharsis through ritual isolation, loneliness, and the importance of growth and change. An Audio/Visual reconstruction will be exhibited in Bristol in 2022, in collaboration with digital artist Rory Joseph, film-maker Cressida Williams, and photographer Claire Addicott.
Destroyertones is a work of two halves, Ritual, and Voltairine. Here’s part three of Voltairine, Unheeding the Storm – Blasts Will Walk Together, which slowly unwinds, with some lovely bell atmospheres giving way to probing organ tones and ever more threatening noise…
Blissed and Burned, in this Sidechain Ouroboros is taken from Rituals, and completes the first part of the album. It’s got some melodic elements that almost feel bagpipe like with it’s melodic phrasing, underpinned by stuttering and rhythmic tones and a warm enveloping bass tone.
You can buy a cassette copy of Destroyertones on cassette from Bandcamp. Enjoy…
