Soft Gradient Beckons, the latest single from Rival Consoles, opens with a distinctive pattern of rising and falling pitch, repeated in a bleep-like rhythm that evokes a kind of mechanised alert. As the track progresses, new elements emerge—subtle string textures, evolving harmonies, and filtered synth pads that push the track forward with quiet momentum.
What begins with a minimal, almost alarm-like motif expands into a more layered and texturally rich piece. By the midpoint, brassy synth tones and gently pulsing rhythmic structures shift the feel into something more physical, but the track retains its composure, never becoming overwhelming. Instead, the piece balances tension and resolution, with each new phrase folding into the last.
The track appears ahead of Landscape from Memory, the ninth LP from Ryan Lee West (aka Rival Consoles), released via Erased Tapes. Like much of West’s work, Soft Gradient Beckons plays with contrast—mechanical and organic, ambient and rhythmic, precise yet emotive.
The accompanying video, created by filmmaker Anthony Dickenson, mirrors this slow evolution with a series of hand-painted frames that reflect the track’s pace and mood. It’s a fitting visual for a track that feels simultaneously introspective and expansive.
