Precursor is the work of Dutch producer, composer, scientist and academic Quirijn Verhoog. His passion is producing music that combines electronica and techno with influences from his scientific world. His latest release is and album called GLIA, available now.
Part of Precursor’s new album, miRNA embodies fusion between science and music. Using genetic data to trigger synthesizers, in miRNA he also brings together distorted cello, modular synthesis and granular vocal chops that culminate in a beautiful crescendo of sounds.
Yunnan tells the story of Quirijn’s travels around remote China, how advanced technologies are being developed and introduced in larger societies, juxtaposed with small towns, surrounded with beautiful nature and locals sticking to age-old rituals. The track asks how should we share our innovations in today’s day and age? Is it better to preserve traditions or embrace future technologies?
It’s a downtempo-electronica track where modern synthesis techniques are mixed with old hardware equipment. The track includes bells recorded from a cave in rural China, to symbolise our past rituals. The track starts from a steady rhythmic foundation, unfolding into a beautiful melodic climax where the bells and melodies intertwine, only to slowly fall apart again…
