nothingspecial is an alias of music producer Graham Marlitt, based in New York. He’s recently released a cracking album called ‘House Tape’ Originals, which is well worth checking out.
The albums opens with Don’t Worry, a collaboration with Rome A., it’s a wonderful vibe with a slowly shifting groove with some mellow chord changes adding interest over a funky bass…
Bodies is the third track from the release, with some distant vocal samples and a warm flute adding to a vibe that’s a little livelier than Don’t Worry, we’re moving a little faster with this one. A soulful vocal from AprilFoolChild is a lovely addition and really takes it up a level…
Following on from Bodies is Focus, with an autotuned vocal from Villvin layered over natural percussion elements creating a sparser vibe. Before too long we found the production completed by a simple bass line and some pulsing beats. It’s simple but effective…
Track five is Stepping Standing Reaching Jumping, with a jazzy feeling provided by some chords laid down underneath a lazy descending piano line. We’re backed up later by the beat, accompanied by a bouncy bass line that got lost somewhere in the early nineties and found it’s way into the track…
Kicked In is the seventh track on the album, featuring IHATEYOUSHEED. It’s a little more aggressive than the rest of track, building to a crescendo before establishing a pounding beat overlaid with a detuned vocal loop adding to the dark mood. It’s effective, different to a lot of what we’ve heard before but an interesting change in mood…
There are more tracks waiting to be uncovered on the album, so go and check it out on Spotify right now…
