Immersion & SUSS – State of Motion: A Fusion of Krautrock and Americana

Immersion, the electronic duo of Colin Newman (Wire) and Malka Spigel (Minimal Compact), return with State of Motion, a collaboration with ambient country trio SUSS. Taken from their forthcoming album Nanocluster Vol. 3, the track blends driving Krautrock rhythms with expansive Americana soundscapes, creating a dynamic and hypnotic listening experience.

Opening with drifting atmospherics and harmonic textures, State of Motion gradually builds momentum, with rhythmic guitar layers leading into a pulsing drum groove. The track’s evolution reflects the interplay between Immersion’s electronic sensibilities and SUSS’ cinematic, wide-open sonic landscapes.

As Colin Newman and Malka Spigel describe it, State of Motion captures “Immersion’s hypnotic propulsion” alongside “SUSS’ open-skies atmospherics.” This creative synergy extends to the video accompaniment, which visually represents the stop-start nature of both the track and life itself.

The Nanocluster project thrives on collaboration, bringing together artists from different musical backgrounds to explore new creative directions. With Nanocluster Vol. 3, the meeting of Immersion’s post-punk electronic influences and SUSS’ ambient country aesthetic has produced a sound that is both exploratory and immersive.

Following the album’s release on February 14 via Swim, Immersion and SUSS will embark on a joint U.S. tour, including performances at SXSW and Big Ears Festival. The tour will feature individual sets from both bands, culminating in a collaborative performance that showcases the essence of Nanocluster Vol. 3.
