Grace Scheele - pomposity (from landings)

Grace Scheele is an American-Canadian contemporary harpist, composer, and improviser based in Toronto. Her music hones minimalistic textures within noise landscapes, and utilising improvisation and sampling, brings her harp firmly into the world of electroacoustic music.

She’s released a wonderful EP, originally conceived as a performance piece to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. It’s a 7-track EP, and here’s the second track, pomposity, which is designed to allow us ‘to reflect on our spaceward ambitions and explorative nature as humans‘. It’s a great track, combining samples, an improvised performance, and some interesting sound processing…

Here’s Grace talking a little about her process…

“I really wanted to stay true to the improvisatory nature of the performance, so I decided to limit myself to one-shot improvised recordings, with no overdubs, editing, or splicing,” explains Grace. “Each take was unique, but shared the common thread of sample choice, instrument, and electronic effects to some extent. Thankfully it only took a few takes for me to feel like we ‘had’ it, with the second take becoming the EP itself.”
