Introduction
All sound can be described using three fundamental properties: frequency, amplitude, and waveform.
These concepts explain how sound behaves and how it is perceived. They are also the basis of synthesis, audio processing, and mixing.
Frequency (Pitch)
Frequency describes how fast a sound wave vibrates.
- measured in Hertz (Hz)
- represents cycles per second
- determines the pitch of a sound
Examples:
- low frequency (20–200 Hz) → bass sounds
- mid frequency (200 Hz–5 kHz) → most musical content
- high frequency (5 kHz+) → brightness and detail
Higher frequency = higher pitch
Lower frequency = lower pitch
Amplitude (Loudness)
Amplitude describes the strength of a sound wave.
- relates to how much air is being moved
- determines how loud a sound is perceived
In audio systems, amplitude is often measured in decibels (dB).
- higher amplitude → louder sound
- lower amplitude → quieter sound
Waveforms (Tone)
A waveform describes the shape of a sound wave.
Different shapes produce different tones, even at the same frequency and amplitude.
Common waveform types include:
- Sine wave — smooth, pure tone
- Square wave — hollow, rich in harmonics
- Sawtooth wave — bright, full spectrum
- Triangle wave — softer than square, fewer harmonics
Different waveforms can have the same pitch but still sound very different.
How These Work Together
Every sound you hear is a combination of:
- frequency → pitch
- amplitude → loudness
- waveform → tone
For example:
- a bass note uses a low frequency
- its amplitude controls how loud it is
- its waveform determines its character
Use the selector to switch between sine, square, sawtooth and triangle waves, then change the frequency to hear how pitch and waveform shape interact.
