Erika Sirola, a Finnish-Canadian artist known for her eclectic musical and visual artistry, has released her first independent EP, ‘THE FOUR FACES EP,’ on March 8, through her own label. This release is accompanied by a self-designed collection of jewelry and clothing, showcasing Sirola’s multifaceted creative talents.
With a career spanning over a quarter-billion streams, Sirola’s journey began with songwriting at eight and her first record deal at 13. Having lived and absorbed influences from Canada, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, and Helsinki, her music reflects a global perspective, merging art-pop with elements from folk, ambient, jazz, and intelligent dance music (IDM).
‘THE FOUR FACES EP’ is a deep dive into the theme of identity, inspired by the psychological theories of Carl Jung. Sirola uses the EP to explore different facets of the self, each represented by a distinct archetype in Jungian psychology. The EP aims to encourage listeners to embrace their multifaceted identities without fear of judgment or misunderstanding.
The lead single, “BERNADETTE,” is a rhythmic and experimental funk piece that delves into the shadow archetype, representing the darker aspects of the self that are often hidden from the world. Inspired by a painting by Đinh Ý Nhi, the track personifies these hidden elements through the character of Bernadette, showcasing Sirola’s storytelling prowess and hypnotic vocals.
Other tracks on the EP include “THERE WAS A BOY,” reflecting the persona archetype and the face we present to the world; “GOLDEN GIRL,” exploring the anima/animus archetype and the struggle for balance between masculinity and femininity; and “A CHILD,” which represents the self archetype, focusing on the journey of becoming whole.
The EP not only marks a significant step in Sirola’s musical evolution but also in her exploration of visual art and sustainable fashion. Each track is paired with a unique visual world, consisting of 3-6 looks that translate the music’s themes into tangible expressions. Her jewelry collection, available through Basic Space, is a testament to her innovative approach to fashion, featuring pieces crafted from antiques, armor, and transformed cutlery.
