“Rhythmic Topographies” opens with clear guitar harmonics that immediately establish the tonal centre of the piece. Light percussion appears behind the harmonics, setting a subtle rhythmic framework before fuller guitar chords begin to enter.
As the track develops, the guitar introduces layered melodic fragments that add energy while maintaining the clarity of the acoustic tone. The harmonics continue to return throughout the piece, acting as a structural anchor while the surrounding textures evolve.
A drum kit gradually comes into focus, establishing a loose improvised groove that responds to the guitar’s phrasing. Rather than following a rigid pattern, the percussion shifts dynamically, pushing and pulling against the guitar lines and creating a sense of movement within the arrangement.
The interaction between the instruments becomes the central element of the track. Guitar chords, melodic phrases and harmonics weave together while the drums provide rhythmic punctuation and variation. The piece unfolds through small changes in emphasis and timing, giving the music a natural flow.
“Rhythmic Topographies” explores the relationship between rhythm and space. The acoustic palette allows each element to remain clearly defined, while the improvisational approach lets the performance develop organically. The result is a textured conversation between guitar and drums that gradually builds a web of melodic and rhythmic detail.
Elia Casu is an Italian composer and producer working in contemporary and experimental music. Based in Istanbul since 2016, he has collaborated with a wide range of artists and performed across Europe in multiple ensembles.
Antonio Pinna contributes the percussion for the piece, bringing a precise and expressive approach that shapes the rhythmic character of the recording.
