Dren McDonald’s latest track, “Orcinus Bulla,” derives its name from the Latin term for the Orca (Killer Whale) and the Bulla, the part of the Orca’s jaw that absorbs sound waves akin to human eardrums. This composition is crafted through layered modular synth sequences, recorded repeatedly with different knob tweaks, and augmented with electric guitar processed via granular synthesis.
The track opens with ambient pads and delaying tones reminiscent of distant guitar elements. As it progresses, the composition builds in intensity and complexity, with high notes leading the charge and more robust tones joining in. Rhythmic elements provide forward momentum, creating an ambient, soundscape vibe with a distinct sense of purpose.
Best known for his video game scores like “CounterStrike Global Offensive” and “Stranger Things VR,” McDonald extends his musical prowess to film, VR experiences, and theme parks. His upcoming album “OCEANIC,” set to release on July 26, 2024, is an ambient collection inspired by the ocean’s calming effect. Drawing on influences from Eno’s Ambient series, McDonald employs unorthodox recording techniques to create experimental timbres and layers.
