Dextro – Inseparable Review: Piano-Led Downtempo with Cinematic Atmosphere

“Inseparable” opens with a beautifully understated piano motif, allowing individual notes to ring out against a gentle backdrop before gradually introducing additional layers. The piano remains the emotional centre of the piece throughout, providing both melody and momentum as the arrangement slowly unfolds.

As downtempo drums arrive, the track settles into a relaxed but purposeful groove. The percussion is restrained, adding movement without distracting from the melodic elements. This balance gives the composition a flowing quality, allowing it to develop naturally rather than forcing dramatic changes.

The arrangement grows steadily across its runtime. Cello, harmonium, droning synths, and subtle rhythmic elements gradually expand the sound palette, creating a rich and atmospheric backdrop around the piano. The result is cinematic without feeling overproduced, with each new layer serving the overall mood rather than competing for attention.

What works particularly well is the sense of patience in the composition. The track takes its time, allowing themes to breathe and evolve. The gradual build towards its more expansive moments feels earned, creating an emotional arc that remains grounded in the simplicity of the original piano motif.

“Inseparable” comes from Dextro, the project of Scottish musician and producer Ewan Mackenzie, now based in Newcastle upon Tyne. Known for exploring the boundaries between ambient, drone, and electronic music, Mackenzie has released work through respected labels including Border Community and Groenland Records, while also collaborating and sharing stages with artists such as Nathan Fake, Loscil, Amon Tobin, and Adam Betts.

Listeners may also recognise Mackenzie as the drummer in the UK band Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, though Dextro explores a very different side of his musical output. On “Inseparable”, the focus is firmly on atmosphere, melody, and gradual development, resulting in a thoughtful and engaging piece of downtempo electronica.

As a result, “Inseparable” has also been added to our Downtempo Playlist, where its combination of piano-led songwriting, ambient textures, and gentle rhythmic momentum feels right at home.
