The Way Through the Forest is a new track by Benjamin Wynn, a sound designer and winner of Emmy awards. It’s a fascinating track created using the Yamaha Disklavier piano.
If you’re not familiar with the Disklavier, it’s acoustic piano that’s fitted with solenoids, allowing the notes of the piano to be controlled externally. Wynn created a custom piece of software that allowed the Disklavier to be overloaded with data, allowing glitching and ‘clacks’ to be heard as part of the sound. It was also (re-)recorded in an abandoned missile silo, adding to the ambience of the recording.
Listening to this I’m reminded of Aphex Twin, and the piano music from Drukqs, which in itself is borrowed from the prepared piano techniques of John Cage. I’m also taken back to Suren Seveviratne’s blue thirty-five, and it’s sometimes harsh, but fascinating MIDI treatment of a piano module.
