Department of Electrophilosophy approach electronic music with a clear conceptual framework. On the paired pieces “Blooming Buzzing Confusion” and “Causa sui,” the Santa Maria project traces a path from early sensory overload to reflective abstraction, using modular and dawless processes to shape the journey.
“Blooming Buzzing Confusion” opens patiently. Bird sounds and faint atmospheric tones sit at the edges of the mix before subtle synth layers begin to rise. The texture builds gradually, adding warmth and movement without rushing toward a fixed groove. There is an organic quality to the sound design, with tones that feel almost psychedelic as they expand into a denser drone. The track ebbs and flows, shifting intensity while maintaining a steady forward motion. It mirrors the idea referenced in its title, the overwhelming rush of first perception, before settling into something more defined and structured.
“Causa sui” begins in a different place. Static bursts and buzzing textures introduce a sharper, more rhythmic energy. Percussive loops and modular sequences create a hypnotic pulse, and the atmosphere becomes more intense. The rhythmic exploration feels deliberate, with patterns evolving rather than repeating mechanically. As the piece progresses, it strips back into ambient tones and delayed melodic fragments, reducing complexity while retaining depth. The closing moments feel contemplative, as if the track has resolved its earlier agitation into something more focused.
The project is led by Marc Bobro alongside Cedric and Malcolm Bobro, all multi instrumentalists with a grounding in philosophy. Working primarily with modular racks, theremin, drum machines and noise generating equipment, they avoid traditional structures and do not rely on samples or AI. The result across these tracks is a sound world that feels exploratory and intentional, with ideas carried through texture and form rather than overt narrative.
Together, “Blooming Buzzing Confusion” and “Causa sui” present an evolving study in atmosphere and rhythm, moving from sensory immersion to reflective abstraction while staying rooted in hands on electronic experimentation.
