Chube, a Cardiff-based fusion band, presents a captivating blend of musical styles in their latest releases, “Katibim” and “Celestial Dance,” both part of their newly released EP titled “Chube 2: Electro-Acoustic Boogaloo.” With a foundation in jazz fusion, Chube expands their sonic horizons, showcasing their artistic evolution and genre-blending approach.
“Katibim,” featured on BBC Wales Introducing with Adam Walton, is a rendition of an old Turkish folk song. Chube infuses their unique treatment into the traditional tune, leading it through a series of funky grooves. Drawing from their jazz fusion roots, the band weaves a tapestry of sound that takes the listener on a rhythmic journey. The wonderful use of harp through the track is a lovely element of the sound and for me draws comparison to the music of Dorothy Ashby. This track exemplifies Chube’s ability to infuse cultural influences with contemporary twists, creating a vibrant and engaging musical experience.
“Celestial Dance,” another original track from the EP, demonstrates Chube’s versatility and willingness to experiment with sound. The piece starts as an ethereal ballad before transitioning into a lighter ambient disco groove for bass and synth solos. The track later returns to its dark and introspective opening theme, showcasing the band’s mastery of dynamic shifts and contrasts. This blend of post-rock and wave elements with an ambient disco twist highlights Chube’s willingness to push boundaries and explore new sonic territories.
Chube’s evolution is mirrored in their lineup, featuring founding member Ben Creighton Griffiths on electric harp and keys, as well as new additions Ashley John Long on basses and Jon Bradford-Jones on kit. This refreshed lineup brings a renewed energy to the band’s sound, allowing them to explore a wider range of musical possibilities.
The EP was recorded at Giant Wafer Studios under the guidance of founding member Matt Williams, who also serves as an engineer and producer for the project. Chube’s dedication to their craft and commitment to sonic exploration are evident in their latest releases.
