Journal Entry #2—The Bloom and the Flutter / DiLasso, Schnittke, GOATs, Ghosts opens with resonant ambient tones that gradually settle into a reflective, atmospheric space. A spoken narration introduces the track with a calm presence before percussive elements begin to form, adding a steady rhythmic pulse. As the voice recedes, string textures rise into focus, shaping the piece with a melodic edge that feels both mysterious and absorbing. Later, fragments of voice reappear, weaving through the soundscape as additional layers emerge.
The work explores nostalgia as a stabilising force in the face of disturbing or overwhelming experiences. Rogowski describes using a technique he calls “nostalgia loops”, built around a motif by Renaissance composer Orlando di Lasso. The motif is performed on piano strings by a simple mechanical device, allowing it to circle repeatedly while new textures, harmonies, and counter lines develop across each pass. The result is a shifting, meditative structure where memory and emotion move in spirals, not straight lines.
