AUTORHYTHM, a Swedish producer led by Joakim Forsgren, has recently unveiled “Synapse/Oxytocin,” an intriguing release that serves as an appendix to their album “Songs for the Nervous System.” Originally available as a limited edition 7″, it’s now accessible on all streaming platforms, allowing a broader audience to delve into its distinctive soundscape.
“Synapse” exudes a captivating energy with an asymmetric quality that draws parallels to the likes of “Can meets John Bender.” It’s a track that doesn’t conform to conventional norms, which makes it all the more enticing. The warm soundscape it creates hints at influences from Cluster’s “Zuckerseit.” It’s an engaging auditory journey that captures the listener’s attention.
On the flip side, “Oxytocin” takes a more ambient approach. It incorporates a recording of a Soviet-era Ocean 209 transistor radio, adding a layer of ethereal otherworldliness to the mix. This B-side track takes you on a languid neo-Kosmische journey, offering a different yet equally mesmerizing dimension of AUTORHYTHM’s musical prowess.
Both “Synapse” and “Oxytocin” have been expertly mixed by Swedish electronic music visionary Christian Gabel and mastered by Mell Dettmer, known for her work with SUNN O)). Their expertise further enhances the sonic quality of these tracks.
“Songs for the Nervous System” is AUTORHYTHM’s debut full-length album, where Joakim Forsgren explores the intersection of music, science, and art. This project originated in 2015, following Forsgren’s diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease. The album is a collection of intuitive compositions inspired by the latest research on how light and sound at specific frequencies can affect the human body, right down to the cellular level. The result is a contemporary electronic masterpiece, blending rhythmic beats with meditative soundscapes, embodying a genreless amalgamation of music and conceptual art.
Joakim Forsgren, the creative force behind AUTORHYTHM, is an accomplished Swedish artist who has curated numerous exhibitions and projects. His journey into music and electronic experimentation began with a 4-track cassette recorder and a limited array of instruments, all while growing up in Skutskär. His musical influences span from European trance dance to Captain Beefheart, Gary Wilson, and CAN. With such a diverse background, AUTORHYTHM’s music emerges as a unique and boundary-pushing experience.
