9ms – M€mo Review: Dub-Infused Rhythms and Machine-Led Groove

“M€mo” opens with bouncing drum patterns and reverb-soaked percussion, immediately creating a strong sense of movement and space. Layers of rhythmic texture gradually build around the groove, with processed sounds and resonant tones interacting in constantly shifting ways.

The track feels heavily focused on rhythm and texture rather than melody, but there’s still a strong musicality in the way the different percussive elements overlap and evolve. The production has a physical quality to it, driven by thick compressed drums and wide stereo processing that gives the track an immersive feel on headphones or speakers alike.

A lot of the interest comes from the detail within the groove itself. Small percussive sounds move across the mix while resonant textures emerge underneath, creating a hypnotic pulse that balances club energy with deeper listening appeal. The use of a drum resonator on the track adds another layer of tonality to the rhythm section, helping blur the line between percussion and melodic texture.

“M€mo” is the second single from the Munich duo’s album Lunch, released through Squama Recordings. Across the album, 9ms continue exploring the relationship between human movement and machine control through motion sensors, gyroscopes, analog voltage systems, and live drum interaction.

The conceptual centre of Lunch revolves around pendulum movement and mechanical motion translated into sound control data. Rather than treating electronics and percussion as separate elements, 9ms fuse them together into a single responsive system where rhythm, movement, and synthesis constantly interact.

There are traces of krautrock, dub, IDM, and experimental electronic music throughout the project, though the duo approach those influences in a very physical and rhythm-focused way. “M€mo” captures that balance particularly well, feeling equally suited to experimental listening spaces and more adventurous dancefloors.
