This song is the first thing Zach Frampton and I ever recorded together, exactly as it happened in that moment, two years ago.
We set up an old upright piano in the middle of my kitchen/dining room and began improvising—Zach on piano, myself on live electronics—and recorded for hours. It was the beginning of a new project and a deep friendship.
The recording started from nothing- the sound of the piano and the creaks of the room. Then we’d slowly layer, trying out ideas out in real time. Searching and failing and finding.
The original session was a long, multi-hour meditation, equal parts listening and playing. Zach would leave to smoke a cigarette while I continued to feverishly edit and manipulate his ideas. He would come back, play some more and I would sit back in awe. Periods of work and rest mixed together.Rafa Aslan
