Introduction
Sound is a form of energy created by vibrations. These vibrations travel through a medium, such as air, and are detected by our ears.

How Sound is Created
Sound begins with vibration.
When an object moves back and forth, it pushes and pulls the air around it. This creates waves of pressure that travel outward.
Examples:
- a speaker cone moving
- a guitar string vibrating
- a drum being struck
These vibrations create changes in air pressure that we perceive as sound.
Sound as a Wave
Sound travels as a wave of pressure through a medium.
These waves have two key features:
- Compression — areas of higher pressure
- Rarefaction — areas of lower pressure
This repeating pattern is what carries sound through the air.
Key Properties of Sound
Frequency (Pitch)
Frequency describes how fast a sound wave vibrates.
- measured in Hertz (Hz)
- higher frequency = higher pitch
- lower frequency = lower pitch
Amplitude (Loudness)
Amplitude describes the strength of the vibration.
- higher amplitude = louder sound
- lower amplitude = quieter sound
Timbre (Tone)
Timbre is what makes different sounds unique, even at the same pitch.
For example:
- a piano and a synth can play the same note
- but they sound different due to their harmonic content

In music production, sound is handled in two main forms:
Acoustic Sound
- physical vibrations in air
- recorded with microphones
Digital Audio
- sound converted into data
- stored and processed in a DAW
This allows you to:
