Factor Eight is a media composer and experimental artist from Saskatoon, Canada. He’s recently released Before The Fall, taken from his debut album II.
His album follows on from his previous ‘A Voice’ tracks, which solely utilised his voice as a sound source. On Before The Fall, he’s utilised a blend of harmonium and drum kicks to underpin his vocal layers.
Speaking of the track, Factor Eight explains:
“This piece initially began as a collaboration between co-writer Armen Bazarian and I during my first residency at the Banff Centre in late 2016. Our experimental work together focused primarily on exploring unique vocal takes, as well as an old harmonium we brought into the studio. We created a sort of instrument by layering and warping Armen’s angelic vocals, and sculpted a collage of drums and textural details using recordings of the harmonium’s knobs and switches. While the track has certainly evolved over the periodical visits over the years, it has become what feels to me like a relic from another world.”
With his upcoming album ‘II’, he continues to emphasize mental health as he shares his personal narrative about living with bipolar disorder. By bringing awareness to this issue, Factor Eight intends to break the stigma that surrounds wellness culture by organically expressing his dual voice – the voice of personal and artistic expression.
