No Enemy is the latest release, and the fourth single from East London based producer, Animai. On November 23rd, East London-based artist/producer Animai. It’s a great track, with an intro that reminds me a little of Portishead, with a jazz-inflected vocal that adds a layer of melancholy. Soon enough were introduced to a more intricate vibe, leading to a chorus that has cinematic, almost Bond-like vibes to it…
Here’s Animai’s thoughts on the track…
“When I composed the track, I was thinking about my own mental health and how we can all be triggered into acting/reacting in ways to protect ourselves. It’s often behaviours we learnt when we were younger; our brain recalls a similar situation and reacts on autopilot. Self-awareness brings a realisation that there is no *enemy*, instead, only pain, and the parts within us that we cleverly developed to protect ourselves from remembering that pain. The song is about witnessing the body react, and then implementing tools to come back into the present moment.”
All about Animai…
Animai is a jazz graduate from the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, who has been involved in dance music culture as a producer and singer-songwriter since 2013. Her music has provided a much-needed outlet to reflect on her 10-year mental health battle to overcome OCD, PTSD, depression and body dysmorphia.
Animai has collaborated with some top names, including grime legend Flowdan, world-renowned deep bass duo Truth, and dubstep pioneer Youngsta. She has performed at Outlook Festival in Croatia on numerous occasions, as well as live PAs across the London club scene, meaning she’s a natural on stage. Her music has been championed online by the likes of Dummy Magazine, 1883 and Clash, enjoyed spot plays on BBC 1Xtra, BBC Radio 6, Capital Xtra, and been featured in TV Show, Orphan Black.
