Frequency State is a platform for independent electronic music, focused on listening, context, and practical creative work.
The project brings together curated playlists, music writing, and resources for electronic musicians, with an emphasis on emerging artists and accessible tools.
Frequency State is part of electronica.org.uk, a long-running electronic project that provides the archive, structure, and continuity behind the platform. Everything published here feeds into a wider, connected body of work rather than existing as standalone content.
What We Do
Curated Playlists
We maintain a small family of genre-focused playlists centred on new and independent electronic artists:
Playlists are updated regularly and designed for sustained listening. Artists featured in playlists are often supported through writing, sharing, and longer-term inclusion rather than one-off placement.
Music Writing & Reviews
We publish concise writing focused on helping listeners discover new music and understand where it sits.
This includes:
- Short reviews of emerging artists
- Contextual articles around scenes, sounds, and approaches
- Features linked directly to playlist updates
Submissions are accepted via SubmitHub, and coverage is handled with clarity and respect for the artist’s work.
Free Music Tools & Resources
Frequency State places a strong emphasis on free and low-cost music-making tools.
We publish practical guides and round-ups covering:
- Free plugins and effects
- Free DAWs and production environments
- Accessible workflows for electronic music production
This reflects a belief that good work comes from understanding tools and process, not from expensive setups.
Tutorials & Practical Experiments
Alongside writing, Frequency State documents practical exploration—such as sound design techniques, software workflows, and experimental setups.
Some of this work extends into video and demo formats, but the focus remains on creating reusable, reference-style material that supports learning and experimentation over time.
How It Connects
Frequency State is designed as a connected system rather than a collection of isolated posts.
Music writing, playlists, tools, and tutorials are developed in parallel and feed into one another. A playlist may lead to an article, an article may reference a tool, and a tool may connect back to listening or practice.
Over time, this creates a growing network of material that rewards repeated visits and long-term engagement.
The Mailing List
The mailing list is an occasional update bringing together new writing, playlist changes, and other activity across electronica.org.uk.
It’s intended for readers who want a simple way to keep track of the project without relying on social media or constant updates.
Why Frequency State?
The name reflects an interest in sound as something active and changeable—shaped by listening, context, and process.
Frequency State is less about genre labels and more about paying attention to how electronic music is made, heard, and shared.
Who Runs It
Frequency State is founded and run by Matthew Greasley.
Matthew works across electronic music, music technology, and education, with experience in studio production, teaching, and experimental performance. Frequency State grows directly out of this ongoing practice, combining listening, writing, and making into a single, evolving platform.
As part of Pattern Recognition, Matthew curates electronic music events and EMOM nights in the South West of England.
