“We Are Lasting” opens with a collection of delicate sound layers that gradually begin to form a shape. Instrumental flourishes appear and dissolve, creating a shifting texture that feels exploratory from the outset. A spoken vocal line sits within the early sections, quiet but haunting, adding a human presence to the evolving arrangement.
As the piece develops, violin textures and subtle electronic tones expand the atmosphere. The production moves patiently, allowing each element to settle before the next enters. There is a careful balance between fragility and depth, with melodic fragments appearing briefly before dissolving back into the wider sound field.
Later in the track, additional vocal layers emerge and bring a clearer harmonic focus. These voices add warmth while the surrounding instrumentation grows darker and more intense. Synths, strings and other instrumental colours combine to create a dense but controlled sonic environment. The shift in mood feels natural, building from the earlier quiet experimentation into something more emotionally grounded.
“We Are Lasting” began as an improvisation between composer and producer Dan Langa and pianist Erika Dohi, recorded during a studio session. That initial performance formed the core of the track, with additional layers of synths, voices, violin and harp added over time. The resulting composition retains a sense of spontaneity while still feeling carefully shaped.
Fugue State is Langa’s collaborative project, bringing together a rotating group of musicians and treating the studio as a space for collective composition. With contributions from Erika Dohi and vocalist Maia Friedman, known for her work with Dirty Projectors and Coco, “We Are Lasting” introduces the project with a sound that blends improvisation, textural electronics and chamber-like instrumentation.
