The Decibel Explained

Introduction

The decibel (dB) is a unit used to measure the level of sound.

In music production, it is used to describe:

  • loudness
  • signal level
  • changes in volume

Rather than measuring sound in absolute terms, the decibel expresses relative differences between levels.


What the Decibel Measures

The decibel compares one value to another.

In audio, this usually means:

  • how loud a signal is compared to a reference level
  • how much a signal has increased or decreased

This makes it useful for describing changes in sound level rather than fixed values.


Decibels and Loudness

In practical terms:

  • higher dB values = louder sound
  • lower dB values = quieter sound

However, the scale is not linear.

A small numerical change in decibels can represent a significant change in perceived loudness.


Common Reference Points

In digital audio:

  • 0 dBFS (decibels full scale) is the maximum level before distortion
  • levels above 0 dBFS will clip

Typical working ranges:

  • around -18 dBFS → common reference level for mixing
  • around -6 dBFS → louder signals approaching the limit

The Logarithmic Scale

The decibel scale is logarithmic, not linear.

This means:

  • a change of +6 dB roughly doubles the signal level
  • a change of -6 dB roughly halves it

This reflects how human hearing perceives loudness.


Decibels in Music Production

You will encounter decibels when:

  • adjusting track volume
  • setting recording levels
  • applying gain or attenuation
  • using EQ and compression

Understanding dB helps you make controlled and consistent adjustments.


Gain and Level

In a DAW, gain controls are measured in decibels.

For example:

  • increasing gain raises the signal level
  • decreasing gain reduces it

Proper level management is essential to avoid distortion and maintain clarity.
