Vocals drift in from a distance, processed with reverb and delay, giving the mix a spacious and slightly ghostly feel. Industrial textures and shifting layers add grit and movement, creating a version that feels darker, heavier, and more exploratory than the original.
Drummer Dom Smith of Strange Pink explains that this collaboration grew from long-standing friendships and shared history within the York music community. Strange Pink’s vocalist Sam Forrest had previously worked with OFFICERS, and the band’s reputation for crafting brooding, industrial-influenced sounds made them a natural fit for a reinterpretation. The goal was to take a tune that originally carried a more upbeat feel and push it into a completely different emotional space.
OFFICERS approached the remix as a full reconstruction rather than a straightforward rework. According to Jamie Baker, the band cut up and reprocessed original elements, added new parts, and treated the track as a collaborative reimagining rather than a simple overlay. Their process incorporated influences from older favourites, new artists they were exploring, and experiments with new gear. The result is a patchwork of textures and ideas that still holds together as a singular piece, with a brittle, strange quality that feels intentional and cohesive.
The mix merges dub sensibilities, industrial edges, and atmospheric production into an engaging reinterpretation that stands strongly on its own. It highlights the strengths of both projects while offering a new perspective on Pencil Chewer.
