Atmospheric sounds open Rokaia’s Still, with rain and distant storm-like textures establishing an unsettled space before a processed vocal line enters. There’s an almost retro quality to the voice, its restricted bandwidth and shifting pitch giving it an unusual, slightly distant character.
The backing is initially sparse, with a simple melodic line providing a point of reference as the vocal moves through different treatments. Pitch effects alter its shape, while the surrounding electronic sounds gradually become more prominent. Rather than introducing a conventional rhythm, the arrangement builds through changes in texture and the accumulation of layers.
As the piece develops, the atmosphere becomes denser. The initial separation between voice, melody and environmental sounds gives way to a more complex web of overlapping elements, although the track retains its restrained, uneasy mood.
Based in County Clare, Ireland, Rokaia works with processed vocals, field recordings and experimental electronic soundscapes. The artist describes Still as the closing track of a collection exploring darker emotional and cinematic territory, with looping and unusual spectral textures forming part of its construction.
Originally released in February 2019, Still is a four-and-a-half-minute piece that develops gradually from its sparse opening into a richly layered ambient arrangement. The processed voice remains central, lending the music much of its distinctive character.
