Radical Man’s “River” opens with a chiming synth arpeggio set against a rolling 6/8 groove, immediately giving the track a sense of forward movement. Drums gradually push through underneath, while a harmonic bassline shifts with the arrangement and brings a slightly retro electronic character to the production.
Vocals arrive quietly and are heavily processed with pitch effects, sitting within the texture rather than becoming the main focus. The track breaks down and reforms several times, with subtle changes to the synths, rhythm and processing keeping the arrangement moving.
The combination of electronic synthesis and acoustic recording gives “River” an interesting balance. There is plenty of structure in the repeating arpeggios and 6/8 rhythm, but the drums, vocal processing and changing textures prevent it from becoming rigid.
