One of my favourite albums in the whole wide world, ever, is Dots and Loops by Stereolab. It was my soundtrack to the late 90’s and still gets spun regularly. So i delighted to be given the chance to bring you a new double A-side single from Hologram Teen.
If you didn’t know, Hologram Teen is the solo electronic motorik disco project of Morgane Lhote, keyboard player with Stereolab through their Dots and Loops and Emporor Tomato Ketchup period.
The Hologram Teen sound is like something from a prog rock disco horror movie soundtrack. “It’s like Fabio Frizzi meets Grandmaster Flash” says Morgane. Her most recent album ‘Day-Glo Chaos’ released on Ransom Note Records was an unashamed nostalgic musical love letter to the 1980’s mixing cinematic strings, French Pop, video game soundtracks, a dash of drum and bass and vocoder vocals.
So here’s the A-side “The Restless Cyclops”, layered with synth strings, electric piano and bell sounds. It’s a fascinating electronic sound, retro in feel, layered with brassy melodies underpinned by a simple but pushing beat…
The flipside, the AA side is a track called ‘Hologram Twang!’, an almost country sounding track with slide guitar flourishes and synth pads. It feels lofi, it uplifting, and certainly brings a smile to my face…
The Restless Cyclops is available now on Bandcamp, Spotify, and all good streaming sites, released through Happy Robots.
