The Hari Karaoke Trio of Doom returns with Tropical Depression, the lead track from their new EP Burst. Featuring legendary fretless bassist Percy Jones (known for his work with Brian Eno and Brand X), this track fuses funky rhythms, wailing guitar feedback, and layered electronic textures. The powerful groove, anchored by a tight drum loop and dynamic bassline, is accompanied by glitchy vocal samples, giving the track a unique, genre-blending feel.
Tropical Depression opens with 28 seconds of feedback-laden guitar, setting the stage for a deep, repetitive groove and phased drum beats. The track pulls elements from dub, funk, and experimental rock, evoking influences like King Tubby, King Crimson, and My Life in the Bush of Ghosts-era Eno/David Byrne. It’s a prime example of the group’s exploratory sound, combining diverse genres into a seamless sonic journey.
This release marks another chapter in the creative collaboration between Kansas City drummer/producer D. Hitchcock and Hudson Valley-based guitarist Sal Cataldi. Building on their earlier works like Escape Velocity and Geolago, the EP Burst continues to push the boundaries of electro-funk, free jazz, and post-rock, offering a distinctive, genre-defying sound.
