“EXP” by Le Double sets the stage with a rolling bassline, soon accompanied by a jazzy, slightly off-kilter drum groove. The track introduces synth pad elements that slow brass tones to provide a sinister harmonic foundation. This piece is a masterful blend of jazz, electronic, downtempo, and brooding elements, gradually intensifying with distortion before returning to its original groove. The later sections of the track feature impressive saxophone improvisation, guiding listeners through twists and turns that meld jazz, ambient, and noise elements into a captivating auditory journey.
Le Double’s debut album showcases a rich tapestry of influences, from dub and post-rock to the 70s era of Miles Davis. Diamantakiou’s compositions are characterized by their complex dynamics, shifting from heavy riffs to angular grooves, each instrument contributing its unique character through extended improvisations. The album seamlessly transitions from ambient electronic abstractions to powerful rhythms and lively solos, following a sophisticated process of build-up, development, and release.
This first opus includes two live-recorded ensemble pieces, remixed by Zach Scholes (Kee Avil), and two entirely electronic tracks, inspired by the remix concept, utilizing similar themes. The bassist and composer employ sampling and layering techniques inspired by dub pioneers and the dense drones of dark ambient traditions, crafting a soundscape reminiscent of Lustmord, Shane Embury, and Bill Laswell. “EXP” offers a glimpse into Le Double’s innovative approach to music, blending a variety of genres to create a unique and immersive listening experience.
